Reasons to be cheerful

On the day when Borders closes its doors, it would be easy to get quite depressed about the decline of reading the printed word, visiting and browsing in bookshops and libraries. The Bookseller (www.thebookseller.com) points out in its editorial of 18/12/09 that in 2000 some 154 million books were sold. This year, that total is likely to be around 240 million. So, is it true that the public are buying more books rather than borrowing books from…See More

Reflections one week on

As I started to draft a report on ecei09 I got sidetracked into reflection on what I recalled, what I'd learned and what value I could pass on to Scottish members.Scotland's been actively pursuing a digital inclusion agenda for a decade and a half now but listening to reports from Latvia and Lithuania I think we have stalled with our rapid developments in the 1990 and are at risk of failing. The broadband pathfinder projects of early 2000 which sought to aggregate public sector demand for ICT…See More

Beer but no chocolate...

I had three aims for my two days in Brussels: help create a good conference; meet some interesting people; and enjoy some Belgian beer and chocolate. Well, two-and-a-half out of three ain't bad!I thought the conference built up momentum really well with the range of speaker perspectives on Thursday feeding in to the workstreams and discussions on Friday and then coming to a rousing climax with Eppo's tour de force to conclude the event.Three themes came out really strongly for me. First, the…See More
